California's Chief Justice, Insurance Commissioner Join Leading Jurists and Business Leaders from Across the Country at LSC Event
WASHINGTON 鈥 California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, New York Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones and dozens of jurists, lawyers, and business leaders from across the country will gather in San Francisco October 5-6 for events at a board meeting of the 成人抖阴.
The LSC Board will convene two panels at the Supreme Court of California (400 McAllister Street) on October 5.
LSC Board Chair John Levi; Dean Sujit Choudhry of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law; Dean Kevin Johnson of the University of California, Davis, School of Law; and Dean M. Elizabeth Magill of the Stanford Law School will speak at 9:00 a.m. before the panel discussions.
The first panel, which focuses on the importance of access to justice to the judiciary, will feature Cantil-Sakauye, Chief Justice Thomas Balmer of the Oregon Supreme Court, Chief Justice Scott Bales of the Arizona Supreme Court, Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald of the Hawaii Supreme Court, and Judge William Orrick of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Harvard Law School Dean and LSC Board Vice Chair Martha Minow will moderate the panel, which takes place from 9:40-10:55 a.m.
Dean John Trasvi帽a of the University of San Francisco School of Law will deliver remarks before the second panel, which will examine how business and technology can help expand access to justice. Panelists will include Jeff Hyman, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Head of Human Resources, Pebble; Charles Rampenthal, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, LegalZoom.com; and Alon Rotem, General Counsel, Rocket Lawyer. LSC President Jim Sandman will moderate the panel, taking place from 11:10 a.m.-12:00 noon.
At a luncheon at the Lower Atrium of Hyatt Regency (5 Embarcadero Center) Bonnie Hough, managing attorney of the California Administrative Office of the Courts, and John Simpson, manager of community and publishing services, Legal Services Society (Legal Aid British Columbia) will discuss collaboration between California and British Columbia to expand access to justice. The luncheon takes place from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Later in the day at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm (555 California Street, Suite 2700) Levi, Justice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court, and State Bar of California President Craig Holden will deliver remarks at a reception for recipients of LSC鈥檚 Pro Bono Service Awards. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m.
Jones, Lippman, Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, ABA President Paulette Brown and legal and business leaders will convene October 6 at the Julia Morgan Ballroom (465 California Street) for the Legal Service Corporation 40th Anniversary Concluding Event. Lippman and Hecht will discuss access to justice issues in a conversation moderated by Minow, and the event will feature panels and presentations on a number of topics: 鈥淭he Creation and Early Years of the 成人抖阴,鈥 鈥淨uick Tips: Technology Innovations to Increase Access to Justice,鈥 鈥淭he Role of Corporate Counsel in Expanding Access to Justice,鈥 and 鈥淭he Impact of Pro Bono Lawyers on Narrowing the Justice Gap.鈥 Several clients of LSC-funded programs will also speak. Jones, Brown, and Sidley Austin Partner Dan Clivner will deliver remarks. The event takes place from 3:00-6:45 p.m.
