A single father’s life was changed by LSC-funded legal aid, helping him regain custody of his son and inspiring him to pursue a career in law to help others. him regain custody of his son and pursue a law degree.

Meet Pierre

Pierre Cordero's life was changed by Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) after his ex tried to keep his young son away from him. Pierre, whose father left when he was young, was determined to be a positive presence in his son’s life. Struggling as a single father, Pierre could not afford a private attorney and was navigating the complex legal system alone. He discovered LAFLA's self-help center while in court, and a staff member helped guide him through the legal process to a successful outcome, with Pierre regaining custody of his child. This experience inspired Pierre to become a lawyer himself. After putting himself through law school, Pierre joined the staff at LAFLA, where he now helps others in similar situations. His story highlights how legal aid can transform lives and create a ripple effect of positive change.

Today, technological innovation and collaborative community support are two of the hallmarks in bridging the "Justice Gap." Join us for this free forum, part of a series recognizing the ��˶��’s 50^thanniversary, educating attendees about the justice gap, offering insights into solutions, and serving as a call-to-action for how each of us can play a role in making our nation's founding promise a reality.

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles: Transforming Volunteer Training with the Pro Bono Training Institute

Grantees will learn how the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA):

1. Built and sustained the Pro Bono Training Institute (PBTI);

2. Developed accessible, high-quality training; and

3. Created a network of organizations and legal advocates.

Hear from Silvia Argueta, Executive Director of LAFLA, and Phong Wong, Pro Bono Director, about how LAFLA established the Pro Bono Training Institute, a free online training platform for pro bono attorneys and legal advocates to receive comprehensive and user-friendly training on legal aid topics.
