The purpose of the Staff Attorney in the Law Library position is to provide on-site advice and brief services to patrons of the Gwinnett County Law Library three days per week and to update Gwinnett Legal Aid’s pro se forms, instructions and website.

Duties and responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities of the Staff Attorney in the Law Library are to include:

  • Client consultations – 3 days per week in the Gwinnett County Law Library
    • Meet with Law Library patrons and provide advice and brief services related to civil litigation matters in Gwinnett County
    • Screen patrons for eligibility for Gwinnett Legal Aid services
    • Enter and track patron engagement in Legal Server, our client management database
    • Research various questions of law and provide short, concise answers to library patrons
    • Embody excellent customer service and the ability to work with individuals, including those who may be limited English speakers, have low literacy, or have disabilities, both mental and physical
    • Exhibit empathy for and patience with working with individuals who are not familiar with the legal system
    • Make appropriate referrals to Legal Aid offices and projects, as well as external legal and social services providers
    • Develop and deliver quarterly presentations for Library patrons on various areas of law
  • Legal Resources updates – 2 days per week at the Gwinnett Legal Aid office
    • Research and write updates to pro se materials in various areas of civil law including family law, housing, and public benefits including forms, brochures and other resources
    • Work with Legal Aid community outreach and education and marketing/design staff to ensure consistent branding across collateral and materials
    • Work with Legal Aid staff to ensure online resources are up to date
  • General Staff Attorney duties
    • As practicable, this position will also assist Gwinnett Legal Aid with regular client screening and intake, community outreach and pro bono support.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be a member of the Georgia Bar in good standing, and have at least two (2) years of family law litigation experience. Applicants must also possess excellent legal writing skills, good communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity. Experience in housing, consumer, public benefits, education, and health law; a demonstrated commitment to public service; prior work with low-income people; participation in law school clinics and trial advocacy courses are preferred. Proficiency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits

This is a grant-funded position expected to continue through 2025 with the potential for annual renewal. The salary for 2 years of legal experience is $58,000. This position will be considered for a part-time role or a job-share. Salaries increase annually based on a salary scale.  The program provides generous fringe benefits including 13 paid holidays, 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. This position may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the U.S. Department of Education.
